Shoaib has sparked the big debate again, by claiming that Sachin "The Great" Tendulkar was scared of him. He has "revealed" this in his new book Controversly Yours.
This is such a big debate that it has never really settled down, it had cool down for sometime. As soon as, there was any India Pakistan match the debate was right back on. This time Shoaib Akhtar has started this debate by writing that Sachin Tendulkar feared him during the 1999 test series between Pakistan and India, and Shahid Afridi has added fuel to the fire by saying that he saw Sachin trembling with fear. This is such a big claim by these bowlers that it can start a war, virtually or shall I call it cyber-war. Both these bowlers are quite big and are well followed in their Country, Pakistan. However, taking their in the same breath as Sachin Tendulkar, my be considered disrespect by some of the people, including me. And by personal experience I can tell you that this will not only in the Indian's mindset, the feeling will be across the globe.
As per some of the news channels, when Sachin was asked about these claims, his reply was , "It is beyond my dignity to comment."
Anyways, I am not sure how true these claims are, whether this actually happened or not, but I can tell one thing that this is only being discussed and leaked now is because Shoaib wants to sell his book. I feel this is nothing but a marketing gimmick, something created just for the publicity. Otherwise, why only talk about 1999 and why not 2003. Everybody knows what happened after that series. Shoaib was kicked all over the world by this 5'4" gentleman, who hardly talks.
I quiet frankly failed to understand why all these cricketers talk about Indian cricket team. Do they not have any heroes in their own country or do their country heroes does not guarantee that much sale of their book as their Indian counterpart. John Wright used the same strategy to sell his book, by dragging Saurav "Dada" Ganguly.
In the whole it is such a shame that people once we all admired are using such cheap publicity to sell their book. Frankly speaking I do not think Shoaib needs such kind of publicity, he is well known around the world and he himself has been part of so many controversies that he should not need such tactics.
I think it does generate publicity and it would increase the number of sales but does anybody have any data on how much sales is effected by such stunts. I am mean people who would like to know about Shoaib would anyway ending up buying his book with traditional marketing techniques. People who are not interested in his book will hardly buy it after reading about the controversy. Alright, there might be some people but then wont he end up losing his dignity or it does not matter anymore, and all that matters are the numbers.
