Travel - Visit Jodhpur

Jodhpur - also known as blue city, is the second biggest city in the state of Rajasthan, India. It attracts tourists from all around the world. Baggy horse-riding trousers of the same name and Jodhpuri Coats are also very famous around the world. Jodhpuri coats were made famous by the first Prime Minister of India, Jawahar Lal Nehru. It is also popular for Meherangarh fort, one of the biggest forts in India and Umaid Bhawan Palace.

The old city is still surrounded by a 10 km long wall built about a century after Jodhpur was founded. Eight gates (locally called as pol, pronounced as pole) lead out of the old city.

Jodhpur is a shopper’s paradise - it is popular for tie and dye, embroidered juttis or mojdis, jewellery, furniture and handicrafts.

People of Jodhpur are very fond of sweets. Snacks include samosa, mirchi bada and kachoris. Mirchi bada being the most popular. Please do not eat these snacks if you dont like hot and spicy food.

Best time to visit: If you are planning to visit Jodhpur, the first point to consider is when to travel? Although there is no lack of tourists coming to Jodhpur at anytime of the year. However, I consider October to February as the best time to travel. Since, Jodhpur is located in the Thar desert area of Rajasthan, it gets very hot during the summers, especially during April to August. During summers the temperature rises to 48 degrees sometime. So it is better to visit Jodhpur during Winters.

Places to visit: The main attraction of Jodhpur is Meharangarh fort, Umaid Palace and Mandore garden. However, there are other places that can be visited as well. There is a Umaid Park, locally known as Public Park, there is a small zoo in this park and the park is host to a number of temples. Rajasthan High Court is also situated in Jodhpur. There are quite a number of places in and around Jodhpur that you can visit. There is Nakoda ji temple, Balsamand lake etc. Apart from that you can visit the Sojati Gate, Nai Sarak for shopping etc.

Duration of Stay: I would recommend a stay of two - three days.  Day 1 you can visit local attractions, day 2 you can go to nearby places and day 3 you can relax or go for shopping etc.

Festive Season: As I have already mentioned that Jodhpur is best to visit in winters, the best period is around Diwali (One of the biggest festival of India). During this festivals Jodhpur Merchant association lights up the whole market with lighting and fun filled stalls. Some of the shops also spent extra money to feature special light effects on their shops. Apart from that Holi is also celebrated extensively in Jodhpur, During holi you will find people walking on street singing and dancing various folk songs.

How to reach / connectivity: Jodhpur is well connected by Road / Railways / Air. Trains and buses connects Jodhpur to all major cities of Jodhpur like Delhi/ Mumbai/ Ahmedabad/ Jaipur etc. Jodhpur has a Areodrome as well, flight of certain cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Jaipur are available with little frequency.

Apart from this if you need further information about Jodhpur, you can leave a comment.
